The American Tinnitus Association - Who Are They and What Do They Do?

The American Tinnitus Association exists because there are an estimated fifty million Americans who are currently suffering from this disorder. The main purpose for the American Tinnitus Association is to raise awareness on this ear ringing condition and to raise funds to conduct further research into the causes and the cures for this debilitating problem.

Many people believe that tinnitus causes just a ringing in the ears, but many are surprised to hear that it can also cause a variety of other uncomfortable sounds. Aside from ringing, tinnitus can also cause a throbbing or pounding sensation in the ears, the sound of the ocean, or a variety of other unpleasant noises.

The American Tinnitus Association was originally founded by a dedicated doctor who had a patient who was suffering from chronic tinnitus. The two of them joined together and the American Tinnitus Association was born.

The ATA has a history of both research and education. Through their website, you can request pamphlets and various other literature to help yourself and others better understand tinnitus. Since they first started up, the ATA has donated over five million dollars to the research into tinnitus. Because so many people are suffering from this condition, they have dedicated themselves entirely to helping to better inform people who experience this, which almost everyone will at some time in their life.

The ATA offers a variety of volunteer programs, which makes it easy for anybody to join the cause. They hold fundraisers that will help raise money for continued research. Portions of the money earned through donations is also used to help provide support and assistance by phone, email, or direct mail to those suffering from the condition. They even support group assistance.

In California, the ATA held their first walk for a cure in order to raise the public awareness of the condition, and to raise money for research and their other services as well.

They also sell hearing protection which can help prevent the condition, and CD`s and sound machines that can help those who already are suffering from tinnitus.

The ATA has regular publications to help keep the public up to date on the latest developments and news about tinnitus, and has proven to be very helpful in keeping people informed about the causes and cures for their ear ringing disorder. A series of videos, also available from their store, helps educate people on the very real problems we face with tinnitus.
